So, in the end of September 2011, after 10 months living in Cairo I have moved back to Italy with my boyfriend (Egyptian). The most important news is that we are still together (going on 18 months now) we're more in love than ever, we have a beautiful home, he's been learning Italian in school and we've been travelling around Italy. That sums it up.

On to answer those who have been asking about Cairo:
As I have said before elsewhere, Cairo is not much of a tourist city (being perhaps one of the ugliest cities in the world, not because it's ugly per se but because it has been let down way too much) usually people tend to come for a couple days, stay in the pretty hotels around the pyramids (as opposed to the ugly and over expensive hotels of Cairo) then one day they will make a quick trip downtown to visit the museum and get the hell outta this dirty noisy city.

Therefore, Cairo doesn't really have the stereotypical touristy sex life as Luxor, Aswan, Tunis, Marrakech and on.
This doesn't mean you can't get laid of course. Cairo is full of horny desperate young men who have neither a wife nor the money to go with a "sharmoota" meaning prostitute and they get tired of their own hands....
Also, Cairo is full of expats working there.. from int'l companies to embassies, schools and so on. Many of them being gay, of course.

In Cairo there is a lively gay local life. But it is a very well kept secret which I respect and therefore will not give details of. There are bars where the real gays go but also and most importantly private parties.
You will not see many westerners there, only residents in the know or the occasional "real boyfriend" as in my case - I mean, an Egyptian will not take there a westerner that he's fucking for money while he's in town..

Stereotypes:

1) Khan el Khalili Market: I have been there 4 times in almost one year and never had anyone offer me anything sexual AT ALL even when I was making it pretty obvious. I saw a very sexy guy once in a shop he had a huge bulge.. the next time I went back I didn't even find the shop anymore!

2) Qasr en Nil bridge: perhaps because of the famous mass arrest that there was a few years ago it is now mainly a place for straight unmarried couples who hold hands - as are the gardens under the Zamalek side of the bridge (opposite Novotel)

3) Nile Hilton: all cruising websites and gay guides mention the Nile Hilton Hotel as full of venues for meeting. Yes. 3 years ago. The hotel ceased being Hilton at least 3 years ago and has been undergoing renovations for 2 years to become the new Ritz Carlton. Scratch it off your list.

4) Hammams: guys, I do know Egyptian people very well, I know how to handle them and I know how to whip them back into shape. I speak a little Arabic too and trust me I WOULD NEVER EVER go to a hammam.
They are sleazy and EXTREMELY DANGEROUS because very low level guys from poor areas go there. Ignore and avoid such suggestions from cruising websites as Hammam in Ramses area or even worse the one in the end of El Marg. I repeat: DO NOT GO. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!!!!!!

5) Tahrir Square and Talat Harb Square: yes, I did have a few guys come to me chat me up with sexual innuendos. One even followed me through all of Suleiman Pacha street rubbing his hard dick through his jeans from across the street. He was rather handsome but I was rather busy shopping with a friend. Generally speaking: avoid Tahrir on Fridays because of the continuous protests.
The most ideal thing to do is just linger on the sidewalk in front of KFC and the metro entrance. Stay there, smoke casually or whatever.

6) Taxi drivers: I've had a few of them. You must know what you're doing and how you're doing it. Biggest problem: if you don't have a home where do you think you'll do it???

7) Cops: if I were completely stupid I'd tell you exactly where you have the highest chances of being picked up by cops and soldiers but it is again extremely dangerous if you don't know how to handle them. Although this might be the best time to engage such activities as Police has lost pretty much all its authority after the revolution.. hence, they get no bribes and baksheesh (tips) and of course they are horny.... but you never know what you might get yourself into... especially because they can't leave their post so they will want to take you somewhere THEY know... and if you don't know the city like I do.... forget about it!

8) Ramses train station: it's been undergoing heavy renovations, there is lots of police and thousands of travellers. I don't see how you would get sex in the toilets there which have an attendant anyway. At best you will catch a guy with a boner but surely you'd have to go elsewhere.

9) Various fast-food toilets: In my experience all a pile of BS. Don't even bother.

Things in Cairo happen more on a "whenever & wherever you least expect it" so you might walk around a road and find a guy rubbing himself while he looks at you, you may find a waiter in a cafe, a massage guy in a spa, a taxi driver and so on.. of course most of them being straight.

For accomodation I will suggest the ones that are IMO the best compromises between price, location and service:

1) Safir Hotel (Doqqi) for the service this hotel comes at a very cheap price (around 65 euros BB for a standar room pool view) the hotel is nice, the rooms spacious, decent spa and gym (don't rely on the masseurs here, very old and ugly).
I personally love Doqqi. It's a safe nice area of Cairo without the mess of Mohandessin or Downtown, more clean, somehow "white" because of all the Embassies but at the same time has a strong Egyptian taste.
More importantly: the first time I was here I walk walking around the hotel to discover the area when I realized I forgot my lighter and this so handsome sharply dressed guy, looking like Man in Black I thought he was some sort of "secret police" or something... he came to me to offer the light and he gave me "the look"... he knew nothing of English and I knew nothing of Arabic.. shortly after he was up in my room... lovely cock too. I've been having sex with him quite regularly till I left Egypt and never paid a pound. He still calls me to tell me he misses me (my mouth and my hole, I guess)

2) Novotel: Cheap side of Zamalek. Perhaps the best and whitest area of Cairo. Around the same price of Safir. Rooms have that cold standard look of the chain, nothing to write home about. masseurs here are young and super handsome.. but never had any luck.
Close to the various Nile boats restaurants and a 15 min walk to the more interesting side of Zamalek. 10 min walk to Egyptian museum and Tahrir.

3) Marriott Zamalek: this sure is the winner if you're looking for a cruisy place. The pretty garden and the various bars especially Harry's Pub tend to be a favourite of many gays. Of course, the price for one night is double the previous 2 hotels (now that tourism is at its lowest otherwise it would be 4/5 times more expensive)
Location is in the center of Zamalek, you'll find cafes restaurants and all you need. never get those taxi outside the hotel, walk to 26th july road and wait for a sexy one to drive by, that's what i always did :biggrin:



Now I will give you a hint, without being too explicit about it: there's the spa of a famous multi-star hotel in Downtown along the Nile that is the favourite hangout of middle/high class egyptian gays. No escorts there, all free (except the spa entrance).
Spa managers seem to know about it, and don't condemn it as long as you are not too blunt about it.

That means that in most of the cases there are no modern showers and sometimes there is even no hot stone in the middle of the room. Most of the stuff like sitting around, chatting, washing, and massage (by other visitors as well as by bath-attendants) happens on the marble ground.

From my experiences in Egypt and Turkey I came to Syria with low expectations regarding hygienical standards and the possibilities for sexual action. I was totally wrong and got surprised.
I found most of the Syrian hammams relatively clean and quite well looked after. In the beginning it was strange for me to get familiar with sitting on the ground for washing and even for the massage, but after a while I found it o.k., and it helped a lot when it came to joining groups...
Sexual action - more or less discreet - was possible in quite some of the hammams in Damascus as well as in Haleb, and I ran into many situations, where the local men got quite uninhibited.
