Has anyone read any works by Naguib Mahfouz, the Egyptian Nobel Prize winning author? I have volume one of the Cairo Trilogy but have yet to start it. It seems he was a prolific writer and there are many other choices by him out ther...any recomendations?

I have read "The Yacoubian Building" by Alaa al-Aswany, and loved it. This work of fiction is an especially good read and it is unique in that it features a main character who is gay, unusual for an Arab work of fiction. This character is also portrayed with dignity and humanity by the author, another unique feature when dealing with Arab treatments of homosexuality. It has also been made into a movie and is available with English subtitles.

Also, I am curious if anyone hase read any of the non-fiction by Mohamend Heikal? He has several books available but his book "Autumn of Fury" was somewhat contoversal in the non-Arab world as it was to a degree critical of Anwar Sadat, in that the book attempted to correct some of the myths the west believed in, with regards to his life and governance. I believe Mr. Heikal also had a lecture series on the Al-Jazerah network for a couple of years. Does anyone know if these lectures are available for purchase on DVD? And if so, are they available with English subtitles?
