this may sound ignorant, but do Muslim Arabs, Turks, etc still wait till 13 to be circumcised? or do you get it done while your still an infant, like Christians and Jews do? If you got it done when you were older, and still remember your uncut days, which did you prefer?

I think in Turkey they wait until the child is older, maybe around 13 and have a big celebration on the circumcision day!

Traditionally, Christians and Jews do it when the baby is born, i think it's supposed to be the 8th day, and Muslims do it when the boy is 13, because according to all 3 scriptures, Issac(father of the jews) and Ishmael (father of the arabs) got circumcised at those ages. I was just wondering if Muslims still wait for the boy to be 13 or if they go ahead and do it when the boy is a baby, b/c i could imagine it being a semi traumatic experience, even if your under anesthesia, to wake up one day and have part of your dick cut off

Christians traditionally do not circumcise, it is just a custom in the US because of Jewish influence in the mid 1900s. Circumcision is a big difference maker between Jews and Christians. It is viewed to be a Jewish tradition by the two groups. Arab men I thought were circumcised right before they reached puberty, but I'm not completely sure how it's done nowadays

I found something interesting off of Wikipedia. It's a collaborative report on circumcision between the World Health Organization, and some other entities, done in February of 2007.
It says 30% of males globally are circumcised, and has this image of Egyptian art work showing an adult circumcision.
As to Musim circumcision,two-thirds of all circumcisions are Muslim circumcisions (20% of males), with the majority of those done in the Middle East being infant circumcisons. Most of the ones done in Eastern and Southern Africa are done post-infancy.

I am just curious (and I hope it doesn't sound too stupid), how do they prepare Muslim boys who are circumcised older, at puberty? Is it the father's responsibility? Do they tell them about the pain?

I think alot of the answers to this question have a gegraphic and political componant to them. Many arab and Perisan men who reside in the large cities had circumcision early or even at birth. Remember, these are in cities that have (or had) as the case may be, relative to recent bombings and invasions, access to good and clean hospitals. Those who reside in outlying provinces and still perform births at home often still wait until the boy is grown a bit. My friend, living in Northern Tehran was cut at birth as was my friend in Baghdad. My friend in Kabul was cut when he was 11...that would have been in 1991, not the height of security and good medical care, and prior to that access to medical facilities was even worse...so many factors enter into the question of "when". There are some Afghan boy approaching their twenties residing in Qetta or Peshawar who are cut...this can be blammed on the events of various wars and needs to flee their homes and enter into the Afghan diaspora. But at some point, they too will be cut. In addition to Arab males being cut, there is a tradition of trimming or shaving pubic hairs and the hairs under the arms. Again, this is done with a nod towads cleanliness.

From the muslim guys I know of at what age they were cut I can say they were no older than 10 years old at the time.

I'm speaking about people from Morocco and Turkey and am not claiming that it's general for the whole population. In Morocco I believe that when they can, they do it quite early, before 6 years old. In Turkey it's as some of you said, a quite important festivity so most boys are already a bit older when they are cut.

im arab and im sure 90% of arab are circumsised in the 7th day becouse its the sona of the islam and yes i was circumsised at the 7th day

I always thought about circumcision as an traditonal/religious act and did not spend many thoughts about it. But some time ago I read a book that was about turkish traditions, for example forced marriages. The book describes some "violent" sides in turkish/kurdish (muslim?) traditions that demand the submission of daughters AND sons (!!!!) under the will of the parents. For the author the act of circumcision was the first violent act in a whole chain of further submissive acts. The young boys fear the cut but suppress their fears to show the braveness the parents expect from them. Circumcision as an traumatic act - what do you think? Exaggerated idea? Or a kind of taboo under men?

there is always common mistake talking about muslim and arab and turkish as they are one thing ,not all arab are muslims arab and and turkish are nothing alike , (bistallion) not all you read is tru ,i told my family i well never get married and they cannot force me i didnt came out to my dad and mom but i think they have an idea

fearful, you are totally right, that turkish and arab people are not the same and also that not all arabs are muslims. I know that very well. And also I know that some traditions are not practised by all familys. So its true NOT to generalize! But NEVERTHELESS some bad traditions occur in turkish or arab familys. And it is no solution to look away! Here in Germany some (!) turkish or arab immigrants brought with them some traditions that are incompatible with our laws and our values. Also more and more gays in Germany feel threatened by young turkish and arab macho boys who feel they have the right to "punish" gays in the streets. Its no solution just to say: Not all turkish and arab people behave like that. I know that there are many civilised turkish and arab people living in europe. But I expect more clear words from the "civilised" turks/arabs to the archaic parts of the conmmunity. Especially the preachers in the mosques COULD use a good influence. But do they do? I dont know.
Please do not understand me wrong: I visit these site because I like arab and turkish culture and especially the people. But that kind of respect means also to take the things seriously! To look away is no sign of respect.
And of course I expect also from the turkish/arab community to critisize things they do not like at german society.

many christians are circumcised here in germany. I was circumcised when I was five or six.

Yes, of course some christians are circumsised. But not because of traditional or religious reasons. Only for medical reasons. Or later if they are adult some decide for a circumcision because they think it look better. So only for medical reasons or voluntarily! But not because of cultural pressure!
