I've to to Paris a few times, and have heard of this place before but never had the chance to visit.

Marais is too over-rated, and u'll be disappointed to find that it has become a hangout for straight youngsters also.

I agree with bulls40, think this must be the grounds for Arabs in Paris.
Heard that this is the place in Paris for authentic Middle Eastern or Indian food too... hmm, good food and great men, yummy! :p
