View Full Version : Tip about viewing order of forum threads (oldest/newest)

I've noticed that the default Thread Display Mode on this site is:

Linear Mode (Newest First). In other words, posts are displayed chronologically from newest to oldest. Personally I find it confusing to view threads in that order. I prefer to see the newest thread as 'the last thread'. To me it makes more sense. Perhaps because it's like that on most of the forum sites I know.

I just found out that it's easy to change this in the options. If you'd like to change the thread display mode to Linear Mode (Oldest First):

Go to:

User Control Panel - Edit Options - Thread Display Options

and there select Linear Mode (Oldest First)

Click the 'save changes' button at the bottom, and you're done.

If you don't know what I mean you can experiment with the setting of course and then view the forums and you'll see what I mean. If you do prefer the other display mode then you can easily change it back.

Just a tip :)

Not sure but perhaps the webmaster can change the default setting for all users in his administrator control panel?

Are you using 'Linear Mode (Oldest First)' too now?

Do you like it better that way like I do?

Are there others here who'd prefer to view the forum threads the way ButtyBoy is suggesting?

I did some reading and testing and it turned out that I could change the setting to 'Linear Mode (Oldest First)', but not for existing users. I have just changed it to 'Linear Mode (Oldest First)' so new users will have that set as default.

Existing users however will need to change the setting in their User Control Panel the way that ButtyBoy already said:

'Go to:

User Control Panel - Edit Options - Thread Display Options

and there select Linear Mode (Oldest First)

Click the 'save changes' button at the bottom, and you're done.'

ButtyBoy, thanks for your input. I'll make this thread a sticky.

I like newest first, just like my email message storage is kept. Just my preference.
