Well, I don't know what to say about the film I just saw, it's very difficult to put into words...BUT, I thought it was very, very interesting and enlightening, it makes you realise that being from the UK how we take things for granted and that some countries are still not comfortable with these issues.......on a different note, it reinforces my thoughts that Arab men are so stunningly attractive and beautiful.....Shepdod

The documentary was interesting though must take issue with section with the psychologist. Whilst homosexuality MIGHT arise in response to some hurt or damage in childhood, it is too simplistic & judgemental to believe that it is always the case & implicitly suggests that homosexuality is a defect rather than merely a difference. It might be seen as a defect if the ONLY purpose in life was to procreate but, as we live in an overpopulated world, that some people do not procreate, is a good thing. People contribute to the world in a variety of ways, not necessarily grand, perhaps just having time for others, showing respect, being kind, funny, considerate which can be all for the good. Having children sometimes causes big problems for others. Like so many aspects of who we are, what we are attracted to arises out of a multitude of causes - some may be genetic as well as experiences in childhood so, rather than finding fault or 'cures', we should learn to bring out the best of how we actually are - gay or straight.

Although a buddhist, I have been inspired by some muslims I've met & disappointed by some buddhists.

A spiritual path is worthwhile if it brings out good qualities of honesty, courage, gentleness & respect in oneself & inspires that in others... but if it ferments fear & self hatred in oneself it leads to the damaging 'demonic' pursuit of fake religion through the hatred, control & persecution of others.

Whilst not setting out to hurt, upset & offend others is a sign of a good, decent person, being intolerant & taking undue offence from the activities of others is not &, unfortunately, some muslims [& others] consider this fault instead to be a badge of piety. This distorts their wisdom so they consider the real PERVERSIONS of violence & repression to be virtues & homosexuality to be sin.

Modern society & modern gay society has many failings - sometimes thoughtless, obsessive, greedy, unkind - which is a challenge to those of us who make it up, to take responsibility for our part in it & to act with respect to others but muslims, although sometimes in very harsh situations of injustice, really have to look to their hearts too, with intelligence, respect & warmth to find an appropriate way to behave towards others in our shared world. If they don't, aside from causing untold suffering, instead of bringing about the triumph of some Islamic Caliphate, they will destroy Islam from within with hatred & barbarism.

I watched all 5 parts and found it very interesting. Sad to say it is true in almost all countries. There are those who would like to see us (homosexuals) removed. As to there not being homosexuals in Arab (Islamic) countries I beg to differ. I chat with many in different parts of the world and especially in Islamic countries. The President of Iran lives withhis head in the sand in respect to homosexuals in his country.

Homosexuality was not accepted in england until... not so long ago! Things evolve, and I hope this will extend to arabic countries

Don't see the problem about using the occasional colloquial foreign word in an english speaking forum so long as it's not being used offensively - after all, we use many, originally foreign, words in english eg safari [arabic] shisha/hookah pipe rendezvous etc. It would also be interesting if someone, who knows offers, a translation & etymology [where it comes from].

As I understand it, beur refers to a young French men of North African descent &, according to Wikepedia, 'the word is a reversal of the syllables for the word "arabe" (Arab in French). It is a term that can be pejorative in certain circumstances. Since the late 1990s, lot of young people use the twice-verlanised term rebeu as a synonym.'

Pied Noir, meaning 'black foot' which sounds a little derogatory like 'wet back' to my ears, but, again, according to Wikepedia, refers to ex-colonialists [ie non-native european settlers] of Algeria who ended up as scapegoats, for the conflict surrounding independence.

There are also many derogatory expressions for [passive] gay men in arab countries, some [from egypt] meaning tyre [khowetcha], makina [machine] & bicycle [ajaala] when translated. Others eg dardum, Khawal, I have no translation for.
See www.gayegypt.com/gayarabic.html

I'm curious about the meanings of words used in other arab countries - anyone have any info? I was told in Tunisia that Asbah! often used as a swearword means semen - again, any info?

PS I've used Google's Language tools http://www.google.com/language_tools
to translate stories etc which is fun, though usually colloquial expressions are either not translated or not translated very clearly though sometimes you can guess!
